About Tomaž
Tomaž Svete is a Slovenian composer living and working in Vienna and Maribor and a professor at the music department of the Faculty of Education in Maribor. He is a leading Slovenian creator in the field of opera music, who has already created an impressive musical opus in this field.
The weight and importance of his musical creation in the field of opera on an international scale is evidenced by the awards he received for his operas abroad: Theodor-Körner-Preis for the opera Abduction from Lake Lauda, Vienna (1992), the first prize for the opera Kriton at the international Johann-Joseph Fux Opernkompositionswettbewerb, Graz (2000) and other prizes. He is also the winner of the Glazer Charter and the Kozin Prize (2016). In the winter semester of 1999, he worked as a visiting Fulbright professor for composition at the University of Hartford, USA.
Operas written so far: King Malchus, Abduction from Lake Lauda, Crito, Poet and Rebel, Pierrot and Pierrette, Pomegranate, Apology and Antigone (after Smolet, libretto: Jurij Souček, Hero of our Time, Ada. He wrote for the Slovenian Chamber Music Theater already three operas: Pierrot and Pierette, The Hero of Our Time and Ada.
