Slovenska skladateljica Tina Mauko pripravlja novo operno delo Deklica z vžigalicami.

Z vžigalicami si je zadnje minute svojega življenja pričarala toplino, ob vžigu halucinirala in nazadnje zmrznila.

The plot (based on H. C. Andersen’s The Little Match Girl): Scandinavia, 1845, on New Year’s Eve.

On a freezing New Year’s Eve a poor little girl, shivering and barefoot, tries to sell matches in the street. Afraid to go home where her father will beat her if she brings no money back, she hudles in the alley and sees a family having a holiday feast. She hasn’t sold a single match, even worse, she was scolded and humiliated. So she sits down and lights the matches; in the flame she sees a series of wonderful visions, but when the matches are gone, she freezes to death.

The opera:

The Little Match Girl is a new Slovenian chamber opera by the renowned young composer Tina Mauko. It is based on the famous H. C. Andersen’s fairy tale which was published in 1845. In our version the cruel story of dreams and hopes of a dying child is modernized, reflecting actual society which, so it seems, hasn’t changed: we calmly pass homeless people by on the street but are full of compassion in front of television; we sympatize profoundly with the world’s misery, then turn off the set and fall sleep…

The Little Match Girl is a fantasy and a symbol of worlds ‘on the other side’, ideas that in our neoliberal world count for nothing. Our new chamber opera is much more than an instructive fairy tale for children, it actually holds a mirror to our bizzare society. The dying girl is not only a tragic figure; in reaching beyond material world she also opens new horizons, she leads us to something new and at the same time something very old, something from the time immemorial – that’s keeping the fire burning, one of most important human duties. So the dying flame at the end of our performance can lead us to search the mystical prehistoric time in us (Rocc).
